A patient with heart failure, kidney disease, neuropathy, weight loss, and GI symptoms may not have multiple separate diseases.
They may have AL amyloidosis.
AL amyloidosis is a life-threatening and frequently underdiagnosed systemic disease caused by abnormal free light chains produced by plasma cells. These proteins misfold and deposit in organs, leading to progressive organ damage.
The disease can affect:
• Heart
• Kidneys
• Peripheral nerves
• Gastrointestinal tract
• Skin and soft tissues
• Autonomic nervous system
