May 8th is National Amyloidosis Day, a day to raise awareness of this serious and often under-recognised disease.
Amyloidosis occurs when abnormal proteins build up in organs and tissues, including the heart. Cardiac amyloidosis can cause heart failure, arrhythmias, fatigue, breathlessness and reduced quality of life, yet many people still experience delays in diagnosis.
Earlier recognition is important. New and emerging treatments are changing outcomes, but people must first be diagnosed and connected with appropriate specialist care.
