I-evuzamitide positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) can help diagnose heart involvement in rare forms of amyloidosis as well as transthyretin-mediated amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) in a noninvasive manner, according to a new study published in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology.
The approach may detect cardiomyopathy in cases when other imaging methods come back negative.
To test the ability of 124I-evuzamitide PET/CT, a novel pan-amyloid-binding radiotracer, in detecting heart involvement in rare forms of amyloidosis with or without known cardiomyopathy, the research team led by Sharmila Dorbala, MD, analyzed 10 patients with rare amyloidosis and 12 controls. Of these, 6 had cardiomyopathy, while 4 did not.
