Black people have a particularly high risk of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CM)external link, opens in a new tab, an incurable condition that can lead to heart failure. And, according to a 2024 studyexternal link, opens in a new tab published in JACC: CardioOncology, they often develop more aggressive disease and get diagnosed later in its course. That’s a dangerous combination. ATTR-CM patients benefit most from early treatment, because currently available medications only slow the disease’s progress—they can’t fix damage already done.
