There are substantial delays from the time of incident heart failure to a diagnosis of transthyretin-mediated amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), according to a new study published in JAMA Cardiology.
Several factors associated with cardiomyopathy and breathlessness are also associated with a delayed ATTR-CM diagnosis, including female sex, a history of aortic stenosis, coronary artery disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
“These findings highlight the need for a heightened index of suspicion for ATTR-CM in patients with other possible etiologies of cardiomyopathy or [heart failure] symptoms,” the authors of the study said.
