Cardiac amyloidosis is a condition in which abnormal proteins, called amyloid, build up in the heart muscle. Over time, these deposits make the heart walls stiffer, so the heart cannot relax and fill with blood as easily as it should. This can reduce how well the heart pumps blood through the body and may lead to symptoms that resemble other heart conditions.
There are different types of amyloidosis that can affect the heart. The two main forms are light-chain (AL) amyloidosis and transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis. ATTR may be inherited because of a gene change, or it may happen with aging when the transthyretin protein becomes unstable and forms deposits in the heart.
