Significant gaps remain in diagnosing hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) within the Black population, a new study in the Journal of Community Genetics warns.
According to the authors, patients suspected of having hATTR should be referred to a heart failure cardiologist so they can be properly diagnosed. They should also receive genetic testing and counseling to assess disease risks for themselves and their families.
These findings are based on a study by researchers in the US led by Kunal Bhatt, MD, from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, which aimed to identify factors contributing to the underdiagnosis of hATTR in the Black population.
