How ATTR amyloidosis can progress over time

Key Information
summary/abstract

ATTR amyloidosis, or transthyretin amyloidosis, is a genetic condition in which protein deposits called amyloids build up in organs and tissues throughout the body and cause damage.

Amyloids may build up in areas such as the peripheral nervous system, heart, kidneys, or gastrointestinal tract.

When this condition affects the heart, it is called transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA). Possible complications of ATTR-CA include abnormal heartbeat, enlarged heart, and orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing).
